The Small Blue Dot presents a dynamic and visceral composition, where deep blacks and fractured streaks of colour create an almost cosmic sense of movement. Thick impasto textures and gestural brushwork bring an intense physicality to the piece, drawing the eye through its layered structure. Subtle hints of pinks, yellows, and greens emerge from the darkness, suggesting the fleeting presence of something fragile amidst a chaotic landscape.

Additional Thoughts...

"The Small Blue Dot" reflects the fragility and resilience of life on Earth. The work was inspired by a conversation about Carl Sagan’s description of Earth as a “pale blue dot,” a reminder of the planet’s smallness and vulnerability in the vastness of space.

The painting explores the balance between light and shadow, destruction and renewal, reflecting the delicate relationships that sustain life. Within the composition, there are subtle forms, including the suggestion of a skeletal figure with a feather. This element represents an ancestral presence, a quiet nod to those who lived in harmony with the Earth.

The piece is intended to encourage reflection on our shared responsibility for the planet, inviting viewers to look again and consider their connection to the natural world.
